WhatsApp takes on Google Pay and PhonePe! Now pay your electricity, gas, credit card, and FASTag bills through your chat app
WhatsApp has launched bill payments in India. This feature allows users to pay their household and utility bills directly within the app. This service is based on the Bharat Bill Payment System network.
RJ Kesari News Desk: WhatsApp, a platform owned by tech company Meta, has launched a bill payment feature in India. This will allow users to easily pay their everyday household bills, including electricity, gas, and water, through the messaging app.
WhatsApp said in a statement that the feature, launched in collaboration with the Bharat Connect (BBPS) network, will give users access to 22,722 bill-issuing institutions across 30 categories, including electricity, gas, water, Fastag, insurance, credit card, and loan payments.
The launch comes days after data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) showed that UPI processing hit a record high in August 2026.
The number of transactions increased to 24.51 billion, a 3.6 percent increase over July, while the total value of transactions stood at ₹29.82 lakh crore.
On a year-on-year basis, the number of transactions increased by 22 percent and the value by 20 percent, and the average daily transaction count rose to 791 million.
August was the second consecutive month when the number of UPI transactions hit a record, following 23.66 billion transactions worth ₹29.88 lakh crore in July.
You can make payments through messaging apps
According to the statement, WhatsApp is rolling out the bill payment feature to people across the country in a phased manner. In the coming days, this feature will be available for all versions of Android and iOS.
It's worth noting that the digital payments ecosystem in India has grown rapidly in the last few years.
This is driven by the widespread adoption of UPI (Unified Payments Interface), the growing penetration of smartphones, and an increasing number of everyday transactions taking place online.
The company said that with Bill Pay on WhatsApp, people will be able to pay bills for various services securely, as easily as sending a message, without leaving WhatsApp.
According to the statement, users can access the Bill Pay feature by tapping the icon at the top of the home screen, view past payments and upcoming bills, manage multiple accounts under the same service providers, and pay using the payment method of their choice.
From metro tickets to insurance purchases
Arun Srinivas, MD and Regional Head, META (India), said that for millions of Indians,
WhatsApp is the easiest way to stay connected with family and friends, communicate with companies, access citizen services, and make purchases ranging from metro tickets to insurance, all without even leaving the app.
Srinivas added that they are making bill payments easier through WhatsApp. "There will be no need to navigate to different apps or track multiple payment dates," he said.
"We want to make bill payments on WhatsApp as easy as sending a message and help bring digital payments to people in remote areas of the country."
