Learn what Microsoft said

Microsoft initially said it had identified a common failure pattern related to authentication and protocol connectivity in Exchange Online, its cloud-based email and calendar service.

The company later determined that the outage was caused by an issue with the core authentication configuration used by several internal services within the Exchange Online infrastructure.

Microsoft engineers conducted manual tests on individual servers before expanding measures to repair the affected infrastructure.

"As our mitigation measures are implemented, we are seeing gradual improvements in service," the company said in an update.

It warned that users may experience varying degrees of disruption and email delays while recovery efforts continue.
