Liquor has become cheaper in this state… The government has implemented the country's first 'AIB tax model'
The Karnataka government has reduced liquor and beer prices in the state, providing significant relief to consumers. The "AIB tax model" has been implemented for the first time in the country. Its primary objective is to bring liquor prices in the state in line with those of neighboring states.
The Karnataka government has taken a historic decision, providing significant relief to the state's liquor consumers. Liquor prices in the state are now set to drop significantly. The government has implemented India's first alcohol-in-beverage (AIB)-based excise duty model, significantly revising its excise policy.
The new policy aims to rationalize liquor prices and make it affordable for consumers. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced this major tax reform in the 2026-27 budget, and it has now been implemented across the state.
AIB tax system implemented for the first time in the country
According to official information released by the Karnataka Excise Department on Sunday, the new AIB tax model will be effective in the state from May 11, 2026. This is the first and unique example of its kind in India's excise history.
This AIB system is considered the "gold standard" for alcohol taxation when it comes to global trade standards. Under this system, taxes are directly determined based on the exact alcohol content of the beverage. This will not only bring tremendous transparency to the tax collection process but also provide a clear roadmap for the industry.
Retail prices will reach par with neighboring states
The biggest and most direct benefit of this new excise system will accrue to ordinary consumers. The state government plans to bring liquor prices in Karnataka at par with neighboring states.
For a long time, it was observed that liquor rates in border states like Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Maharashtra, and Kerala differed significantly from those in Karnataka, resulting in consumers paying more.
After the implementation of this new structure, prices for popular brands in Karnataka will be nearly equal to, or even lower than, those in these states. The department's primary focus is ensuring consumers access to affordable, quality liquor.
Companies were given the freedom to decide their own prices
This entire process also marks a major policy change for the industry. Until now, the government had direct control over the determination of retail prices, but the new policy deregulates this process.
