Government's ₹6.5 Lakh Crore Water Push Could Create Big Opportunities for These 3 Stocks
RJ Kesari News Desk: India's growing focus on water infrastructure is opening up fresh investment opportunities in the stock market. As the government prepares to invest nearly ₹6.5 lakh crore in water supply, wastewater management, and sanitation projects, companies operating in this sector could benefit significantly.
Backed by flagship initiatives such as Jal Jeevan Mission, AMRUT, and Namami Gange, India's water infrastructure market is expected to witness rapid expansion over the next few years. Industry experts believe companies like WPIL, EMS, and Welspun Enterprises are among the key players that could gain from this long-term investment cycle.
India's Water Infrastructure Market Is Set for Massive Growth
With rapid urbanization, expanding industrial activity, and the increasing number of data centers, the demand for reliable water infrastructure has never been higher. Addressing water scarcity and improving wastewater treatment have become national priorities.
According to industry estimates, India's water and wastewater infrastructure market is expected to grow from approximately ₹3.95 lakh crore during FY20–FY24 to nearly ₹6.31–₹6.51 lakh crore between FY25 and FY29. This growth is expected to generate substantial business opportunities for companies involved in water management, engineering, and infrastructure development.
WPIL Strengthens Growth with Global Projects
WPIL is a well-established player in the water infrastructure sector, specializing in pumps, water management systems, and turnkey engineering solutions. The company operates across India, Italy, and South Africa, giving it a diversified revenue base.
Although domestic execution slowed due to delays in government project funding during FY26, its international operations continued to perform strongly. The company reported a net profit of ₹199.7 crore, supported by overseas contracts.
WPIL currently has an order book worth around ₹4,936 crore, while a recent acquisition in South Africa has added projects worth nearly ₹3,000 crore, further strengthening its long-term growth pipeline.
EMS Continues to Benefit from Government Water Projects
Engineering company EMS derives nearly 75% of its business from water-related infrastructure projects, making it one of the major beneficiaries of government spending in this sector.
The company is actively involved in projects under the Namami Gange and other public infrastructure programs. Although revenue declined during the previous financial year due to payment delays, management has described the slowdown as temporary.
EMS currently holds an order book valued at approximately ₹1,837 crore, providing strong revenue visibility for the coming years.
Welspun Enterprises Makes a Big Bet on Water Infrastructure
Among the three companies, Welspun Enterprises has one of the largest exposures to India's expanding water sector.
The company is developing India's first multi-storey wastewater treatment plant in Dharavi, Mumbai—one of the country's most ambitious urban infrastructure projects.
Around 70% of Welspun Enterprises' order book is linked to water infrastructure projects. The company currently has an impressive order book of ₹13,817 crore and reported an 11% increase in net profit to ₹393 crore during the last financial year.
Its strong project pipeline positions the company well to benefit from rising government expenditure on water management.
Why Investors Are Watching the Water Sector
Several structural factors are driving interest in water infrastructure companies:
- Massive government spending on water supply and sanitation.
- Expansion of urban infrastructure across India.
- Growing demand for wastewater treatment and recycling.
- Long-term project visibility through government schemes.
- Increasing industrial and commercial water requirements.
These trends are expected to support steady order inflows for companies operating in the sector over the coming years.
Should Investors Pay Attention?
The government's proposed investment in water infrastructure represents a long-term growth opportunity rather than a short-term market trigger. Companies with healthy order books, diversified operations, and strong execution capabilities may benefit as projects move from planning to implementation.
However, investors should remember that stock market investments involve risks, including project execution delays, policy changes, and broader market volatility. Conduct thorough research or consult a qualified financial advisor before making any investment decisions.
