US eyes Russia-Iran oil issue, wants to expand energy trade with India
Heavy tariffs were imposed on India during US President Donald Trump's tenure, straining relations between the two countries. Although several tariffs were later eased under an interim agreement, a comprehensive trade deal has not yet been reached.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday. The visit comes at a time when relations between India and the US are under pressure due to trade tariffs and growing concerns about Pakistan and China. The two leaders discussed trade, energy security, and the global situation at length.
US emphasis on energy cooperation
During the meeting, Rubio stated that American energy products can play a vital role in meeting India's energy needs. He emphasized that the US wants India to diversify its energy supply sources.
The US believes that American oil and gas could be a better option for India amid the global energy crisis that arose after the Iran war.
Rubio also stated that the US will not allow Iran to influence the global energy market. India's increased purchases of Russian oil in recent months have also raised US concerns.
Tariff dispute worsened relations
Heavy tariffs were imposed on India during US President Donald Trump's tenure, straining relations between the two countries. Although several tariffs were later eased under an interim agreement, a comprehensive trade deal has not yet been reached.
Experts say the delay in the trade deal is impacting relations between the two countries. The growing closeness between the US and Pakistan is also a cause for concern for India.
Discussion on Quad and White House visit
During the meeting, Rubio extended an invitation to Modi from Trump to visit the White House.
He also discussed the Quad foreign ministers' meeting, which is scheduled to be held in India next week. The Quad group comprises India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.
During the talks, India reiterated its commitment to resolving global disputes through peaceful diplomacy and dialogue. Analysts believe that despite current challenges, the two countries are striving to maintain a strong strategic partnership.
