☀️ Major Shift In Weather Patterns As Extreme Heatwave Relents

In what promises to be a massive turning point for central and northern states, the relentless, record-breaking heatwave is expected to weaken slightly on May 28, 2026. According to the latest meteorological bulletin released by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a robust fresh Western Disturbance is rapidly advancing over the region. The atmospheric changes triggered by this upcoming weather system are highly anticipated to break the spell of the current severe heatwave, paving the way for a gradual decline in daily maximum temperatures across the plains of North-West India.

While daytime conditions will remain uncomfortably hot across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan, a dramatic shift in the local climate is highly probable by late afternoon or evening.

🌧️ Severe Thunderstorm and Rain Alerts Across Northern States

The weather office has placed multiple northern states under a high-alert status, predicting widespread thunderstorms, lightning, and dust storms over the next three days beginning May 28.

  • Delhi-NCR Weather Update: The national capital region—including Delhi, Noida, Gurugram, and Ghaziabad—is projected to witness a partly cloudy sky. High-velocity dust storms blowing at speeds of 30 to 40 km/h are expected later in the day, accompanied by isolated light drizzle or convective rain showers in select pockets.

  • Uttar Pradesh (UP Weather Alert): Major atmospheric changes are brewing over UP. Several western and eastern districts are bracing for fast-moving squalls and sudden downpours. This shifting dynamic is forecast to trigger a sharp drop in regional mercury levels by 8°C to 10°C over the subsequent 48 to 72 hours.

  • Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan: Border zones and arid belts within these states are similarly vulnerable to intense dust storms, thunderclaps, and scattered light to moderate rainfall as a direct consequence of the incoming Western Disturbance.

⛈️ Monsoon Readiness and Heavy Rainfall in Southern & Northeast India

While the north looks forward to an escape from sizzling summer conditions, rainy weather operations are intensifying across India's southern peninsula and northeastern frontiers:

  • Assam and Meghalaya: The meteorological department maintains a strict alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall in these regions. Authorities warn that low-lying urban pockets and river catchments should prepare for temporary waterlogging and flash floods.

  • Southern Peninsula: Coastal tracts along Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Andhra Pradesh are looking at sustained wind speeds of 40-50 km/h. Local forecasts predict moderate monsoon-like showers alongside a high probability of frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes.
