India’s Green Revolution: First Indigenous Hydrogen Train Set to Launch in Haryana
A historic milestone in Indian transportation is set to be achieved on July 17, 2026.
RJ Kesari News Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially inaugurate India’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell train, marking a transformative shift in the country's railway infrastructure. The launch will take place at Jind Railway Station in Haryana, setting a new global standard for sustainable travel.
A World-First Experiment
While several countries have explored hydrogen train technology, India’s project is distinct. This will be the world’s first hydrogen train to operate with 10 coaches, a significant upgrade from the smaller configurations seen elsewhere. By utilizing this 10-coach experimental design, India aims to test the scalability of green hydrogen technology for mass transit.
The Railway Ministry has selected the Jind-Sonipat route for this launch, with plans to expand the service to other regions across the country over the next two to three years.
Clean Energy: Replacing Smoke with Water Vapor
The primary appeal of this new train is its environmental impact. Traditional diesel engines, known for high carbon emissions, are being replaced by hydrogen fuel cell technology. The result is a clean-running train that emits nothing but water vapor.
Despite the advanced technology, the train is designed for comfort and safety. While trials have successfully demonstrated speeds of 120 km/h, the operational speed for passenger travel has been capped at 75 km/h to ensure maximum safety.
Key Features and Specifications
Designed for the modern passenger, this non-AC train offers a blend of comfort and advanced safety features:
-
Capacity: 682 comfortable seats with the ability to carry approximately 2,600 passengers per trip.
-
