RJ Kesari News Desk: This pioneering service will operate along the 89-kilometer route connecting the towns of Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, offering a clean, modern alternative to traditional diesel engines.

Hydrogen Fuel Cell Technology: A Cleaner Future

Moving away from conventional diesel power, this train utilizes advanced hydrogen fuel cell technology. By generating electricity directly through hydrogen-based chemical reactions, the train produces zero harmful emissions, with water vapor being the only byproduct. Designed following formal approval from the Railway Board in May 2026, this initiative is a core component of the national strategy to decarbonize the railway network.

Operational Details and Schedule

The hydrogen train is designed for efficiency and high capacity, featuring a 10-coach Hydrogen DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) configuration.

  • Daily Coverage: The train is expected to travel approximately 356 kilometers per day.

  • Frequency: The schedule includes two round trips daily between Jind and Sonipat.

  • Capacity: The train boasts a total capacity of approximately 2,600 passengers, with 682 comfortable seats.

  • Operating Speed: While the train demonstrated a maximum speed of 120 kmph during rigorous testing phases, it will maintain a safe operational speed of 75 kmph for regular passenger services.
