Government Says Urea and DAP Supplies Are Secure Despite West Asia Crisis

Agriculture News: The Central Government has assured farmers that there will be no shortage of urea or DAP fertilisers despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.

RJ Kesari News Desk: According to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers, fertiliser imports, domestic production, and stock levels remain sufficient to meet the country's agricultural requirements.

Officials said proactive planning, diversified imports, and higher domestic production have ensured an uninterrupted supply of fertilisers across India.

15 Fertiliser Ships Have Safely Reached Indian Routes

The ministry said that out of 20 ships carrying fertilisers and raw materials to India, 15 vessels have safely crossed the Strait of Hormuz and are proceeding towards Indian ports on schedule.

These shipments include:

  • 8 ships carrying approximately 3.32 lakh tonnes of urea
  • 4 ships carrying around 2.57 lakh tonnes of DAP
  • 3 ships carrying nearly 1.11 lakh tonnes of sulphur

The government expects these shipments to reach India without significant delays.

Five More Ships to Arrive Soon

The ministry also confirmed that five additional vessels are expected to depart for India shortly.

These include:

  • One ship carrying 0.25 lakh tonnes of ammonia
  • One ship carrying 0.45 lakh tonnes of urea
  • Two additional urea vessels currently being loaded
  • One sulphur shipment under preparation

Officials remain confident that these cargoes will also arrive according to schedule.

India Diversifies Fertiliser Imports

To reduce the impact of disruptions in West Asia, the government has expanded its import network by sourcing fertilisers and raw materials from multiple countries.

Urea imports have been arranged from:

  • Oman
  • Malaysia
  • Vietnam
  • Georgia
  • Nigeria
  • Russia
  • Finland
  • Egypt
  • Algeria
  • Türkiye
  • Netherlands

Meanwhile, DAP and NPK fertilisers are being imported from:

  • Russia
  • Morocco
  • Egypt
  • United States
  • Jordan
  • South Korea
  • Tunisia
  • Saudi Arabia

Most of these shipments are arriving through the Red Sea shipping route, helping maintain uninterrupted supplies.

Domestic Fertiliser Production Exceeds Targets

Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilisers J.P. Nadda said that although global supply chains faced disruptions due to the West Asia conflict, timely government intervention helped safeguard the interests of Indian farmers.

The ministry added that natural gas supplies to fertiliser plants, which had temporarily fallen by nearly 65%, have now returned to normal, allowing all domestic urea plants to operate at full capacity.

During the first quarter of FY2026-27 (April–June):

  • Urea production: 71.55 lakh tonnes (Target: 67.86 lakh tonnes)
  • DAP production: 9.84 lakh tonnes, exceeding the target
  • NPK production: 20.77 lakh tonnes
  • SSP production: 13.50 lakh tonnes

The higher-than-expected output has further strengthened India's fertiliser availability.

More Than Half of Annual Requirement Already Stocked

The government stated that against India's annual fertiliser requirement of 383.9 lakh tonnes, the country has already built a stock of 197.56 lakh tonnes, which represents over 51% of the yearly requirement.

Officials said the combination of:

  • Strong domestic production,
  • Diversified imports,
  • Healthy inventory levels,

has ensured that fertilisers remain readily available across the country.

Government Reassures Farmers

The Centre has reiterated that it is closely monitoring the global situation and will continue taking all necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted fertiliser supplies during the ongoing agricultural season.

Farmers have been assured that urea, DAP, and other essential fertilisers will remain available on time, preventing any disruption to sowing and crop cultivation.
