Aaj Ka Mausam (8 June 2026): IMD Issues Orange Alert as Southwest Monsoon Advances into 21 States; Severe Heatwave Continues in North India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a massive nationwide weather alert, revealing a deeply divided climate landscape across India. While the Southwest Monsoon is picking up speed and bringing torrential rainfall to 21 states, parts of Northern and Western India are still trapped in a relentless summer heatwave.

The latest weather update indicates a major clash between moisture-laden monsoonal currents and dry, fiery westerly winds.

1. Southwest Monsoon Acceleration & Heavy Rain Forecast

According to the latest monsoon update, an active cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal has rapidly accelerated the advancement of the monsoon. Heavy to very heavy rainfall warnings have been triggered for a massive geographical corridor stretching from the southern coast to the northeastern hills.

  • Orange Alert in the South: The IMD has issued a strict Orange Alert for Kerala, Mahe, and Coastal Karnataka. Isolated areas are bracing for cloudburst-like conditions and severe waterlogging.

  • High-Risk Zones: Coastal Maharashtra (including Mumbai), Goa, and Konkan regions are under a dedicated heavy rain alert. High-speed winds ranging from 50 to 60 km/h are expected to hit the Odisha and West Bengal coastlines.

  • Northeast Progress: Seamless moisture distribution has brought widespread precipitation to Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh, raising sudden alarms for localized landslides.

2. North India Heatwave Alert: Delhi, Punjab & Haryana

While the south experiences cooling rain, the National Capital Region (NCR) and adjoining plains are battling severe heatwave conditions. The intense heat is keeping daytime temperatures significantly above normal levels.

State/Region Expected Max Temp Dominant Weather Conditions Predicted Relief Date
Delhi / NCR 43°C — 45°C Blistering heatwave, dry surface winds, clear skies. June 11 (Western Disturbance arrival)
Punjab & Haryana 42°C — 44°C Severe heat stress, rising power demands, dry weather. June 11 — June 12
Rajasthan 44°C — 46°C Extreme heatwave in Jaipur, Bikaner, and Barmer; dust storms. June 12 (Squall lines expected)

IMD Heatwave Warning: Residents across the northern plains are advised to limit outdoor exposure between 11:00 AM and 4:00 PM to avoid heat exhaustion. A powerful Western Disturbance (WD) tracking toward Jammu and Kashmir is the only system capable of breaking this heatwave by late evening on June 11.

3. Central & East India Breakdown: UP, Bihar, Jharkhand & MP

Uttar Pradesh (UP Weather Today)

The UP weather update shows a striking east-west split. Western UP remains hot and dry under the influence of heatwave winds. Conversely, Eastern UP is rapidly gaining humidity. The IMD warns that this volatile mixing of air masses will trigger localized severe thunderstorms, dust storms, and dangerous lightning strikes across eastern districts over the next 48 hours.

Bihar & Jharkhand

  • Bihar Weather: Oppressive humidity is driving up the real-feel temperature. While conditions remain sticky, pre-monsoon showers and deep convective clouds are shifting into northern Bihar, bringing a heavy rainfall warning for mid-week.

  • Jharkhand & MP: An active weather alert for thunderstorms and thunder-squalls is in place. Wind speeds could briefly cross 50 km/h during downpours in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh.

Uttarakhand Mountain Forecast

The Uttarakhand Meteorological Center has released an extended weather outlook valid through June 13. While the lower valleys are experiencing high temperatures, the higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Chamoli, and Pithoragarh are tracking isolated precipitation. A widespread rain and thunderstorm cycle will envelop the state starting June 11 due to the incoming Western Disturbance.

4. Political Voices on the Shifting Climate

The rapidly evolving weather has also entered political conversations. Reflecting on the unusual and erratic start to June, newly appointed political leaders, including West Bengal's Suvendu Adhikari, noted that despite being less than a month into their roles, managing the intense volatility of seasonal shifts and ensuring local administrative readiness has quickly become a top priority.
