Aaj Ka Mausam (8 June 2026): IMD Activates Orange Alert for Kerala and Mahe; Severe Thunder-Squalls Warning Issued for 10 States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a series of critical weather warnings, placing southern peninsular India and several northern plains districts on high alert. Highlighting Aaj Ka Mausam, a powerful Orange Alert is now active for Kerala and Mahe, where active monsoon systems are unleashing heavy to very heavy rainfall.

RJ Kesari Desk: Concurrently, a volatile atmospheric setup is triggering severe thunder-squalls, lightning strikes, and high-velocity wind hazards across central and northwestern parts of the country.

1. Southern Coastline: Severe Orange Alert and Marine Advisories

The IMD weather alert emphasizes an intense accumulation of monsoonal moisture along the west coast. Coastal communities and urban systems are currently adjusting to rapid, high-volume downpours.

  • Heavy Rainfall Warning: Parts of Kerala and Mahe are experiencing prolonged precipitation, with localized accumulations threatening low-lying infrastructure with flash waterlogging.

  • Fishermen Safety Warning: Due to rough sea conditions and squally winds ranging between 40 to 60 km/h over the Kerala-Lakshadweep-Karnataka coasts, the weather agency has strictly advised maritime workers to suspend all sea-bound operations through mid-week.

  • Neighboring Impact: Widespread rain bands have also extended deep into Coastal Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and the Lakshadweep archipelago.

2. Multi-State Squall Alert: Thunderstorms & Hail Hazards

While the southern peninsula deals with heavy monsoon precipitation, central and northern states are experiencing extreme convective instability. The IMD expects powerful weather events across a massive multi-state corridor.

[Severe Squall Alert Zone]
├── North: Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttarakhand
   ├── Central: Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha
└── West: East Rajasthan, Gujarat, Konkan & Goa
  • Thunder-Squalls & High Winds: High-intensity thunder-squalls and sudden wind disruptions are sweeping through Delhi, Chandigarh, Haryana, Punjab, Telangana, and the Vidarbha region.

  • Hailstorm Warnings: Isolated high-altitude and interior zones—specifically within Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, and East Rajasthan—are under alert for sudden hailstorms alongside severe lightning activity.

  • Dust Storm Activity: Blistering westerly elements are generating high-velocity afternoon dust storms across West Rajasthan, lowering visibility along major travel networks.

3. Central & East India Weather Update

Region / Zone Current Weather Status Dominant Environmental Risk Expected Shift
Uttar Pradesh & Bihar High humidity and rising convective cloud layers. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Isolated showers by June 10.
Odisha Extremely oppressive, hot, and humid parameters. Severe heat stress and thermal discomfort. Moisture relief after 48 hours.
Northeast States Persistent rainfall across hills. Localized mudslides in Assam and Meghalaya. Intensified rain after June 9.

IMD Precautionary Advisory: Local administrations have been advised to monitor water drainage structures in urban flash flood zones and secure temporary canvas or metal roofing structures against unexpected high-speed squall impacts.
